FAQs
I’m really worried about silicosis!
Don’t be! First and foremost — we take cleaning very seriously here. Floors are mopped 6 days a week, and surfaces are cleaned daily. Walls and corners are washed regularly. I close the studio when we mix our glazes from and kiln wash from dry mix — as a matter of fact, we close the studio for any task requiring a respirator!
All that said, silicosis is a very real thing, but it is something you need to be aware of, not afraid of. Silica exists in clay, but clay dust it is not simply silica dust. Exposure is both present and limited.
This podcast is a really great resource with science to back this up.
Whats this about vitrification?
My glaze has crazing + pinholes!
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
I’m pregnant! Is the studio safe for me?
Congratulations! I am simply a potter, not a doctor, so you’ll need to consult yours and make that decision independent of me.
That said, we’ve had people work in the studio right up until week 40. We recommend you wear gloves while glazing and are very honest with yourself as your body changes! We can explore adjusting our shimpo stools so they tilt forward for your comfort, we can get you set up with underglaze or hand building projects if the wheel isn’t comfortable but you’re dying to get your studio time in, or we can pack you up a little hand building kit to take home. With clear communication, we can accommodate almost anything.
