what is a LAMP?
a lamp is a light source. you can take full creative liberties from there. use a bulb! a tradional lamp kit + shade! a tea light! make an oil lantern that doubles as a survival tool for the end times! only you know what is right for you.
LAMPS are a fun project that presents both a challenge and opportunity for makers of all levels. EVERYONE is encouraged to participate.
LAMPS must be finished by mid-September, this will be a contest, and the winner will receive a free month of membership. We really want to encourage you to put your all into your lamps. Get out your sketchbooks! Get lost in a rabbit hole of how many different light bulbs exist in this world…..

HOW TO MAKE A LAMP
order of operations —
Draw your idea! Think about where the cord will go, and consider which type of lamp kid you’re using. If you don’t already have a shelf notebook, now is your time.
Do the math – measure your lamp kit/light bulb components, google your clay shrink rate, and use this calculator to sort of the size of your openings.
Build your form. Slab, coil, pinch—whatever! Remember to consider your openings and make sure there's enough access to install the bulb/cord/etc once fired.
When glazing, keep any surfaces that need to fit hardware together free of thick glaze! I’d recommend waxing the openings.
Finally, you’ll install your lamp kit. Be patient! Many are finicky. We’re happy to help :)
A few things to keep in mind……
Think about how light will come through your piece. Small holes, cutouts, and texture can create really beautiful shadows.
Don't make the opening for your socket too small — it is far easier to epoxy the difference in space than it is to dremel it larger!
If you're making a pendant, plan for how it'll hang before you start building.
If you're making a wall sconce, think about how it will sit against the wall and where the mounting hardware will go.
If you’re using a traditional lamp kit — the lampshade selection on Etsy is incredible.
This project is a killer opportunity to explore form. It doesn't have to look like a traditional lampshade—the more sculptural, the better! Get weird!
