FAQs

What is overglaze?

Overglaze, also referred to as luster, is a third firing typically fired between △020 and △017. Overglaze + luster are applied to glaze fired work. Luster in particular can be expensive and tricky, but when you get a win, you get a win.

Should I provide my own luster?

The studio will provide Mother of Pearl and a few colored lusters, and you are responsible for purchasing your own silver or gold. I’d highly recommend sharing a bottle with fellow members!

If you’d like to order your luster from Clay Art Center, where we LOVE to give our business, you can call, place an order, pay over the phone, and we can pick it up for you. Email court! We go about twice per month. Please do not rush us.

What about overglaze decals?

They’re welcome here too! Just email court directly.

How many pieces can I bring?

Each sign up includes enough space in the kiln for 3 medium sized piece (think a 9in diameter bowl) NO WORK TALLER THAN 8 inches unless you’ve worked it out with Court.

What if I want to luster fire more work?

You’re in luck! We’ll plan to run a 3rd about every other month from this point on.

Members are also more than welcome to request their own firings in our small kiln if you fall in love with the process and would like to produce a larger batch of luster or overglaze work. Just email court, and we can figure something out!

We HIGHLY recommend firing some test pieces before doing this, which is what this community firing is perfect for.

When should I glaze my work?

If you’re using the studio provided MOP or colored luster, it is on the top shelf above the underglazes. Debra and Madison will be your best resources for luster application related questions.
